Traditional 1850’s Wedding Celebration Re-Created at The Homeplace in LBL
  Where:  LBL
When:
October 18, 2008
Join the staff at The Homeplace Living History Farm, located in Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area, as they re-create the joyous event of an 1850’s wedding celebration on Saturday, Oct. 18.

The annual event brings to life an 1850’s wedding, including the customs, traditions, games, and festivities of an 1850’s-era wedding celebration. Many visitors from throughout the region come to join the celebration, making this one of the living history farm's most popular events during the year.

Interpreters dressed in period clothing will re-create the wedding of a typical couple from the Pryor Creek area, now a part of LBL. “Weddings were major social events for a community during the 1850s," said Cindy Earls, special events coordinator for The Homeplace. “Everyone gets involved and I think that is what makes this event so popular. Visitors are the farm family’s guests and they’re invited to participate in everything from dancing a reel to playing wedding games. It’s as if they were close friends with the couple getting married.”

Wedding games, traditional music, dancing, wedding cake and cider, and a lively "shivaree" of the newly married couple follow the ceremony. Wedding preparation and trousseau viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The wedding ceremony and celebration is from 1 to 4 p.m. Program is free with Homeplace admission.

Land Between The Lakes is managed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with “Friends of LBL,” to provide public lands outdoor recreation and environmental education. We encourage visitors to review our website at www.lbl.org each season, and throughout the season, for our Calendar of Events, updates on programs and policies, and temporary trail and road closures. LBL’s Turkey Bay OHV Area to Offer ATV Training
  Where:  LBL
When:
October 18, 2008
All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders will learn the skills they need to ride safe while having fun when Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area offers ATV training at Turkey Bay OHV Area.

Professionals from the ATV Safety Institute will return this year to host several ATV safety training courses at LBL during 2008. “This training provides a good base for those who wish to learn proper riding techniques, build riding confidence, and gain an increased sense of awareness out on the trails,” stated Kyle Varel, Assistant Manager at Turkey Bay. “Topics range from learning correct riding posture, to turning safely, and even tackling obstacles.” Varel said all ATV riders or members of the household who are the original owners of their ATV are invited to attend the training course. ATVs can also be provided upon request.

The first courses took place in April, June, and August. The final safety course in 2008 offers two sessions scheduled for Saturday, October 18, at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Each session will last approximately four hours. Individuals planning on attending this ATV course should contact the course administrator to be added to the roster. In the event of inclement weather, training may be cancelled; therefore, we recommend participants “Call Before You Haul.” Up-to-date information is available by calling 270-924-2000 or visiting our website at www.lbl.org, then clicking on “Trip Planning” and “Trails Update.”

If you have any additional questions or to sign up for the course, contact Connie Hathorn, class administrator, at 270-753-1902. You may also visit www.atvsafety.org for more information.

Turkey Bay OHV Area to Pay Tribute to Military Moms and Dads
  Where:  LBL
When:
October 18, 2008
On Saturday, October 18th Turkey Bay Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area at Land Between The Lakes will offer free riding passes to currently enlisted service men and women, or those who have spouses stationed overseas, who have children 12 years old and younger. The free 1-3 day riding permit can only be obtained at the Turkey Bay Gatehouse. Free permits will not be available at the Golden Pond Visitor Center.

Parents are encouraged to spend time with their children on the newly opened Turkey Trot Kids’ Riding Area, an area designed for children age 16 and under with ATVs no larger than 90cc.

The six-tenths of a mile trail includes numerous terrain features that allow kids to become more accustomed to riding before heading out on the main trails. The enclosed area provides a safer place for parents to teach their children the basics of proper ATV riding. Stop by the kiosk signs at the entrance to review the Turkey Trot map and riding regulations with your children before entering. Parents are free to walk in and along the trail to teach and supervise their children. “Everyone here at Turkey Bay is excited about the new kids’ riding area,” stated Kyle Varel, Assistant Manager at Turkey Bay. “The Turkey Trot Kids’ Riding Area will help teach young riders how to be safer for years to come.”

Turkey Bay’s staff wishes to thank our military for their dedicated service to our country.
